Music Notes

Van Halen

Van Halen The Van Halen American hard rock band officially formed in 1974. This was after two years of performing in the Southern California area under other names. Their first album, the self-titled Van Halen, was released in 1978.

I’m not really a hard rock or heavy metal fan. Songs from this band are exceptions.

Van Halen – Everybody Wants Some!!

This is a hit song from their 1980 Women and Children First album.

I didn’t hear this song until I saw the “Better Off Dead” movie from 1985 (sometime in 1986 or 1987, on HBO). It was also used in 2009’s “Zombieland” and the movie of the same name in 2016.

Van Halen – Jump

This is one of the hits from the 1984 1984 album.

My wife, Josie, loved this song in 1985. That was probably because she saw the music video on MTV every day.

Van Halen – Panama

This is another hit from the 1984 1984 album.

I was a dork the first time I heard it. I thought they were saying “Cannonball” until someone corrected me.

David Lee Roth was only 18 when he joined Van Halen (under its original name) in 1972. He left the band in 1985, but he recorded his first solo album while he was still with the band. He didn’t rejoin the band permanently until 2006.

David Lee Roth – Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody (medley)

This is one of the hits from his first album in 1985, Crazy from the Heat.

David Lee Roth – California Girls

This is another hit from his 1985 Crazy from the Heat album. I don’t usually like cover songs, but Dave’s version sounds better to me than the original Beach Boys version.

As you can see, I haven’t collected anything after what Van Halen and David Lee Roth did in the eighties. Music changed a lot from the nineties on and the band changed with it.
